What is a Turbo-roundabout?
A turbo-roundabout is a relatively new type of roundabout, which provides a spiraling flow of traffic, requiring drivers to choose their direction before entering the roundabout. Professor L.G.H. Fortuijn first introduced it the late 1990's as a safer and more efficient alternative to the
standard multi-lane roundabouts.
The first turbo-roundabout was built in the Netherlands in 2000 and soon became so popular that the Dutch government developed it's own design guidelines. As of today, there are nearly 300 turbo-roundabouts in the Netherlands. |
Turbo-roundabouts in the world
Over the last decade, turbo-roundabouts spread also outside of the Netherlands, – mostly in Eastern Europe, and Germany but also in North America. While some countries strictly applied the Dutch model for turbo-roundabout design, others built them on experimental sites resulting in region-specific geometrical variations. Today we count 390 turbo-roundabouts worldwide.
